Consciousness and intelligence are two different things. Let’s be clear about that fact before we slide down the rabbit hole to answer the question is consciousness a controlled hallucination? First we must understand what science has come to deem consciousness. Consciousness is a two-fold answer with one being the sensory experiences in the world (like interactions and events) and the other being the experience of being you (like thoughts and emotions). A heavy influence in the self experience is past experiences, right or wrong, good or bad. Here’s where it gets trippy. Our inner self likes to color our reality based on perceived experiences. Using Google Deep Dream (see 7:35 in TED Talk), we can see how our brains can alter reality to a controlled hallucination. So this video showed us what it looks like to be an algorithm-adjusted reality and because most of us agree on what we see in the video, it’s considered reality. The hand experiment is wild (see 10:11 in TED Talk). Our biological feedback is what keeps us alive, it’s our mechanism for survival. The brain is an integral force in our survival and our reality needs to be minimal in pain and abundant in pleasure. This is where controlled hallucinations come into play. They don’t make us bad people – they make us survivors.
