It’s no secret traditional anti-depressant drugs don’t work for everybody. Now medical research is revisiting the use of ayahuasca for the treatment of treatment-resistant depression.
Ayahuasca is used as a traditional spiritual medicine in ceremonies in the Amazon. Back in the 1960s, some scientific circles were researching the benefits offered for the treatment of depression. Obviously it was frowned-upon at that time but it’s coming around, once again.
In a small study, patients who received a single-dose of ayahuasca were shown to be free of major depressive symptoms for 21-days. Patients in this study were resistant to traditional depression therapy like SSRIs.
The way this treatment works on the brain is by increasing blood flow to the areas that play a vital part in mood and emotion. The participants who had a greater emotional awakening during the ceremony also had the most therapeutic response from it.
Here’s a book that was published over a year ago touting the medicinal benefits of ayahuasca. It’s nice to know there are some researchers behind the lines looking for solutions where traditional medicine has fallen-short. For those interested in pursuing it, be mindful that this is truly a sacred ceremonial gift.
